Here is why a foundation programme might be right for you:
You can get a feel for the tertiary education environment.
If you have recently completed secondary education, foundation and preparatory courses give you a chance to settle into tertiary study. Studying at tertiary level may be very different to what you are used to, with the independent learning style and reduced contact hours often presenting a challenge for new undergraduate students. Taking the time to complete a foundation course means that you will adjust to tertiary study before you commit to pursuing a qualification. You may even progress to further study at the same institution, meaning you will already know your way around campus!
You can prepare for university studies after a long break from formal education.
If you wish to lay a solid foundation for graduate studies, foundation programs are the ideal solution to pave the way to your next level of qualification. They allow you to refresh or upgrade your academic skills in order to re-enter formal education. Mature students who complete a foundation course are generally better placed to enter tertiary study. A foundation course allows you to broaden your knowledge, enhance your capacity for independent academic work and sharpen your skills for rigorous research and scholarship.
You get an introduction to different academic streams and improve your academic skills.
The MountCrest FYP adopts an interdisciplinary approach in giving you an introduction to different academic fields. This also helps students in discovering more about their areas of interests and possible career paths. A foundation course also allows you to develop the skills needed to succeed in tertiary education. This ranges from general study skills (such as academic writing, time management and independent research) to knowledge in specific areas related to your chosen field. If you are lacking a prerequisite, or feel like you could benefit from a refresher, a foundation course can provide you with the knowledge you will need for your course.
You may gain credit towards further study
Upon completion of our FYP, all participants will receive a certificate of participation from SOAS University of London. This is not an exit award on its own but may help you to gain entry to a degree programme at SOAS University of London or at MountCrest (in addition to satisfying minimum entry requirements set by the National Accreditation Board). In other institutions it may count towards evidence of proficiency levels for consideration for further study. However, you will need to contact individual institutions for details.
It is a unique feature of the MountCrest level 100 stage of studies
All MountCrest level 100 students are automatically enrolled onto the FYP, giving them a strong foundation to their 4-year undergraduate degree programmes. Level 100 students are eligible for merit-based scholarships and prospective students, both Ghanaian and International, are encouraged to apply.
Merit-based scholarships are available. Prospective students are encouraged to apply.
