MOUNTCREST UNIVERSITY HOLDS MAIDEN CONGREGATION FOR PUBLIC HEALTH GRADUANDS

MountCrest University College (MCU) has held its maiden congregation for the first batch of 35 graduate and post-graduate students from its Faculty of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences.

The ceremony which took place at the Kanda Campus in Accra, saw 24 graduands receive their Master of Science in Public Health/Health Services Management and Master of Public Health while eleven took home the Bachelor of Public Health and Health Services Management degrees, which were conferred by the Pro Vice Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Professor Rita Dickson.

The event was MountCrest’s Fourth Congregation; the first three being for its Faculty of Laws.

The new Rector of MCU, Professsor Charles K.  Kankam, in his address, said it was the primary aim of Mountcrest to expand its programmes beyond Law and Public Health that are currently being offered so as to meet and satisfy government’s policy of free and expanded educational programmes at the primary and secondary levels in the country.

He, therefore, appealed to Professor Rita Dickson, to use her good offices to assist MountCrest to receive the affiliation instruments for the BSc. Business and Public Administration programmes which have been under review by KNUST for a while now.

He informed Prof. Dickson that applications have also been made for affiliation of programmes in Civil Engineering, Geomatic Engineering, Welding and Materials Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Actuarial Science and Financial Mathematics. These new programmes in Engineering and Science would be mounted in Larteh-Akuapem in the Eastern Region.

Prof. Kankam announced that new facilities for programmes in Allied Health Sciences including Public Health, Nursing, Midwifery, and Laboratory Health Sciences and Medical Assistants are nearing completion at Larteh-Akuapem and on completion of the structures, the main campus for Public Health would be relocated to Larteh.

This implementation, he said, would create the opportunity to use the available space at the Kanda Campus to build new facilities to accommodate new programmes.

He also announced that the Law Faculty would be celebrating ten years of accreditation in 2020. The school was therefore planning a grand graduation ceremony soon to commemorate and celebrate the milestone.

Encouraging the new graduates to go fourth and do exploits for Mother Ghana and in the process make MCU proud, Prof Kankam referred to KNUST’s requirement that all postgraduate students undertake research, write and defend their thesis, and said having gone through all that, it was necessary that the graduands and their faculty advisors disseminate their research findings and put them into practice to make a positive impact in the health and social sectors of Ghana.

In her valedictory speech, Miss Eunice Mawulawoe Amuzu said the Class of 2018 embarked on a journey that has brought them together as an MCU family. Now, they have a broader scope of knowledge, more enlightened and better skilled to smoothly transition into the world.

She expressed their gratitude to have been a part of the prestigious institution ad said it was time to leave the sweet shelter of MCU to go out and achieve exploits with the knowledge and training received.  “Life is tough, and so are we. So let us be fearless, spread our wings and soar to new heights,’’ she added.

Three BSc. Students took various awards. They are Ms. Ornalle Estelle Mongue Tchinjo, the Best Undergraduate Student; Ms. Eunice Mawulawoe Amuzu won the Dr. Kofi Ahmed Prize for Surveillance and Mr. Yaw Asante won the Dr. Samuel Akor Prize For Evidence-Based Health Services.

In the Master’s category, Mr. Stephen Kwame Adase and Mrs. Julia Selby both bagged the Best Thesis Award.

Among those present was the Founder of MountCrest MCU and the Dean of Laws, Mr. Kwaku Ansa-Asare.
